PlayStation E3 2016 Recap

Shawn Layden's Avatar Posted by President, Sony Interactive Entertainment America | Chairman, SIE Worldwide Studios

We have just concluded the PlayStation E3 Press Conference for 2016 and if ever there was a year dedicated to thrilling entertainment experiences, this is it. This year we unveiled a stellar lineup of extraordinary games for both PS4 and the upcoming PlayStation VR. We showed incredible new games including Days Gone from the SIE Bend Studio, the new Spider-Man from Insomniac Games, God of War from SIE Santa Monica Studio, Death Stranding from Kojima Productions, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard from Capcom.

Other featured titles from SIE Worldwide Studios included the highly anticipated titles Horizon Zero Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, and The Last Guardian, which I’m delighted to confirm will launch on PS4 October 25, 2016.

We also confirmed that PlayStation VR will launch on October 13, 2016 in North America. And what is a new platform without content? In the press conference we unveiled unique PS VR experiences, including Farpoint from Impulse Gear, Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission from Electronic Arts, and Batman: Arkham VR from RockSteady and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment.

Perhaps I should also address the bandicoot in the room. My t-shirt choice for the keynote at PlayStation Experience in December caused a bit of a stir. So you can imagine how thrilled I am that we worked with Activision to bring one of PlayStation’s most celebrated characters, Crash Bandicoot, to PS4. The Crash Bandicoot Remaster will contain Crash 1, Crash 2, and Warped, fully remastered for PS4. Speaking of our partners at Activision, PlayStation continues to be the home to one of the world’s biggest franchises with the upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Believe it or not, I’m only scratching the surface on E3 this year — you’ll find more details below, and we’ll be adding updates throughout the week.

Before I sign off, I want to thank you for your support. When we launched PS4 in 2013, we made a promise to put gamers first and I am so proud that we have continued to build on that promise and bring you entertainment experiences only PS4 can deliver. Let us know what you think about the show this year and thank you so much for continuing this journey with us.

Today at PlayStation’s Press Conference, we revealed our new Spider-Man game coming exclusively to PS4. (Surprise!) …. From a personal and professional standpoint, this is a dream come true. I’ve been an avid Marvel fan all my life. When I first learned Insomniac was approached by our long-time friends and collaborators at Sony Interactive Entertainment with the opportunity to create a blockbuster Spider-Man console game experience, I practically ran into Ted’s office professing my passion for Spider-Man — along with a desire to serve as creative director. Fortunately, there are many more longtime fans and professional admirers of Marvel at Insomniac. From comics to films and TV, Marvel has a stellar reputation for unique characters and storytelling filled with personality and humor. Those are tenets we value deeply in our own craft. Detroit: Become Human
Quantic Dream
PS4
Inspired by our short called “Kara” back in 2012, Detroit is a neo-noir thriller set in the near-future city of Detroit. Androids, who look exactly like human beings, have replaced humans in most tasks: they are workers, babysitters, gardeners, nurses, teachers, clerks. The story of Detroit starts with an unexplained incident that begins to affect the Androids. Some disappear without any explanation, others have unexpected behaviors and strangely show signs of emotions. The rumors of “deviant” androids start spreading, but no one seems to know what’s really happening… Read the full PlayStation.Blog post here.

Batman Arkham VR
Rocksteady Studios
PS VR
The switch from screens to headsets was a fascinating creative and technical challenge for us, as it has inspired us to really focus on Batman’s detective skills and find new ways to use them. We all feel that we’ve ended up creating an amazing new Batman experience that is both complementary and a counterpoint to the epic grandeur of Batman: Arkham Knight. This time around we’re telling a highly focused, very personal story entirely in first-person. Batman: Arkham VR is an intense murder mystery in the style of the classic Batman comic books, but with a strong dose of the dark psychology that the Arkham games are well known for. Cryptark
AlienTrap Games
PS4
An ancient floatilla of derelict hulks drifts through space, ripe with valuable alien technologies just waiting to be salvaged. Even though the alien inhabitants are long dead, cybernetic security systems lie in wait to shred any intruders. Empowered by a contract of privateering, and a surly mech-suit bristling with ordnance, you must plan your boarding action, load munitions, and blast your way through the alien wreck to destroy the Security Core and get paid! Cryptark is a plasma-scorched 2D sci-fi shooter, and all of us at AlienTrap Games are excited to be showing it off at E3 this year. We’re certain that Cryptark’s aggressive firefights will get some smiles on the showfloor, but there’s more depth beyond just the flying shrapnel. As a scrappy mech privateer, everything you do is financially orientated. All those shells and rockets cost money! Achieve the obscure objectives set by your shadowy employers, and increase your rewards. Just don’t get fragged, or you’ll be left holding the bill. Go into the red, and your tenuous government contract will be terminated! Cryptark will be bringing its unique blend of action combat and “space-pirate business management” to PS4 this fall.

Dear Esther
The Chinese Room
PS4
Back in 2012 Dear Esther pushed forward the boundaries of game design and broke the mold in storytelling — not bad for a project that began as a Half-Life 2 mod. We at Curve are bringing it to PS4 this summer with added Director’s Commentary mode, redefined controls for modern consoles and Trophies to unlock throughout the game. For the first time, PS4 owners will be able to explore the mystery of this remote Scottish island. There’s a lot of questions to be answered: What is the significance of the aerial? What happened on the motorway? Is the island real or imagined? Who is Esther and why has she chosen to summon you here?

Verdun
M2H & Blackmill Games
PS4
Anxious for a WW1 shooter? Verdun, the first WW1 FPS game is coming to PS4 on August 30. Over the past year we had lots of requests for a console version from the Verdun community, so we started fine-tuning the game with Abstraction Games for the console version. We distracted the community with several free expansions on the PC, ones that of course were in favor to expand the WW1 realism and Western front for all of you. We hope this surprise is not only exciting for the Verdun community, but also for all you curious PlayStation players! For those that haven’t heard about the game yet, Verdun is a multiplayer first-person shooter set in a realistic World War 1 setting. The game takes place on the western front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. The developers were inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun France in 1916. The game offers four distinct game-modes: Frontlines, Attrition, Rifle Deathmatch and Squad Defense.

Oh and BTW, im glad that they didn’t show TLOU 2, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Shenmue 3 along with next Sucker Punch Game.
Why ? Because we NEED BIG GAMES for PlayStation Experience 2016! Last year was very underwhelming to say the least. I hope and im sure they’re gonna blow everyone this year after i watched this year Sony E3. They finally know how to make a real presentation, LESS talk, straight to the point and lot of games show. Just pure awesomeness.

With only 3 PS Vita games out of the 27 on this list Sony has finished convincing me what a terrible investment would their PS VR be, since it will likely get the same treatment as the PS Vita if it fails to meet Sony’s expectations.

Overall a very disappointing E3 again this year.

I second this. After the way Sony’s absolute lack of support towards the Vita, what would stop them from abandoning the PS VR a couple of years later? The way Sony has treated their products, particularly PS Vita and PSTV, makes me wonder if I’ll ever invest in their consoles anymore. Sony simply has lost their credibility in supporting their products. And do not think the PS VR will be any different. It will come and go, and will be forgotten about in no time.

Considering it’s a peripheral that costs as much as the ps4 when it launched I think you are correct. IF I get it at all, it will be at least a year after launch. I want to make that it get proper support before investing in it, as well as let that ridiculous price go down some. If I wanted to drop large amounts of money into gaming to stay current I’d still be on PC.

I don’t know why you’re so focused on the games. VR is a huge step in video game tech! You should be happy something like this is bevoming so open to the public :D even if the games are bad it opens a doorway to greater things AND improvement further down the road.

Couldnt agree more. While I never bought a Vita, $ony will have no problem putting it to their customers one way or another, sooner or later. Worst E-3 in recent memory if not ever and I like VR.

Things that could easily go bad with Sony VR as far as the customer goes:
-They stop support and let it die(like Vita)
-it runs terribly on PS4 Original and pretty much requires PS4.5
-They try to force a ton or add-ons/peripherals on us
-it doesn’t work with PS5(should there be a PS5) or when PSNow Becomes Sony’s new console, they try to sell you a new VR
-Even with PS4.5, PSVR tops out very fast and falls behind the curve like PS4 did on release(PS4 was already way behind on release)
-PSVR MOST LIKELY will ONLY work on PS4 and not on PC

Finally, those DUMB enough to Buy a .5 console would be better off buying an XBox Scorpio which will allow a Better VR experience with Oculus and quite possibly Vive and Razor’s VR headset being compatible(only speculation, but Ill bet green money they all work on XBox scorpio)

I have to ask this because I didn’t think going an entire conference without mention of the word “Vita” (or really, any lengthy announcements at all – I don’t like going from game-to-game) was even possible.

Off-topic, is God of War a sequel or a reboot ???

Please be a sequel, this give the God of War 3 ending much more sense and creating more possibilities. When he opened the Pandora, all the chaos and devil came out and turn the world into a new one, and with the fall of Olympic, new Gods arise, a new fantasy begun like we saw hours ago. As for plots, the main character can both be Kratos and non-Kratos.

1. Kratos survived and be a dad again like we saw in the trailer.
or 2: The main character we played are actually not Kratos, but a new Hero with Kratos spirit and powers in it.
or 3: The main character has nothing to do with Kratos, and Kratos is actually trapped in some holy place and will be revealed as the FINAL BOSS!
OR a new companion of him, whatever you prefer :).
Or 4: whatever you want it to be. As long as the previous world of Kratos is canon with this new God of War.

These plots sound much better than the whole Reboot. Please not dumping down all 10 years of lore, hardworks and legacy to the river… please make it canon.

GOW is a sequel! the story takes place 30 years I think after GOW3.

It’s a reboot in gameplay and game design and over all tone and story approach and basically everything really, but as a story it takes place after GOW3 so it’s technically a rebooted sequel.

Plus all the other awesome upcoming games that we already know about (Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last Gaurdian, etc.)

Iwith all the sidescrolling, 8to 16 bit and overhead indies coming out I’m wondering why PS4.5 is even a real thing. If you look at the catalog in PlayStation store. Theres like 85 percent low graphic indies that a higher definition will just make it loook worse. I mean wtf do i need all the power of the reg ps4 for. I can play on pc with better resolution and indies on smartphones and tablets. Its like when a food processing company wants to stretch their product they add filler and all indies, except a small percetage that dare about making a meaniful gaming experience, are just filler to get u through to the hext big AAA. Hell if you wait they all end up on ps plus free games or Xbox live Games with Gold for free.

I agree to a extent but Playstation Neo was first being developed mainly as a Slim Lined Version that solved some heat issues and beefed up the porcessors and adding 4k Syreaming and Gameplay. But since Xbox One was gonna push a uphraded console to enable VR on the Xbox1 plus 4k & HDR so Pkaystaion has known this alot longer than the so to stay on top they jad no choice so that brought then back to the drawing board which beought them having to upgrade the entire Cpu & Gpu to be able to stay the best quality Console this Generation.
Also from inside sources I’ve heard that the new Ps4 Neo will make the PSVRHYPE headset alot cheaper to purchase because the new console will have the PSVRs processor box thats needed for using VR on the (Day One) Core Ps4 & that’ll drop PSVR 2 under $200 from what ive heard

Plus I dont have a 4k TV or even plan On getting one so uograding to the Xbox1 S for a controller IDC aboit and a smaller system thank prob over hear easier due to the power brick which gets hot now be in internal instead of being able to place it on the floor away from console keep in it cooler in lomg term game sessions

Now that you and Activision are best friends, can we PLEASE get the ability to play the Crash and Spyro PS1 Classics on the Vita? And then after the Crash trilogy remakes you should remake CTR and the Spyro trilogy from the ground up as well. :D

Oh, and where was Sucker Punch?

Yeah right I figured we would get a CGI trailer for there next upcoming big title atleast but guess them releasing The Full Crash Bandacoot Series Remastered was all they were gonna release this conference.
Since Sony began having the #PlaystationExperience a few years back now, they have seemed 2 only release a few big news items at the #E3Conferences. But I cant almost guarantee that come PlaystationExperience 2016 we will see atleast 5 times the amount of releases and alot more gameplay for each. Seems like Sony has finally got a good game reveal to game release ratio since the first few years of these consoles being released they were plagued by many game delays or games being released not finished. Seems like they have finally found there groove (atleast I hope)

    cusman said:

If going by game budget to classify as AAA, I know games like LEGO Dimensions, Skylanders, LEGO Starwars / Batman / etc all continue to have couch co-op gameplay.

I also know Call of Duty games continue to include split-screen co-op and the last one called Call of Duty Black Ops 3 even had splitscreen co-op through the campaign (rest before it were for the co-op mode or competitive). You could look up if the new one called Call of Duty Infinite Warfare is keeping with that tradition or not.

I am sure there are more, but most games including co-op tend to be top-down or 2d games that don’t have AAA budgets. The best among them for my taste has been Helldivers.

From Sony conference, I am sold on the following:

Horizon – Zero Dawn : Going to go for the big spend and get the collector at this point. Want that statue

God of War : I have long felt the series should have ended with 3, and couldn’t even find motivation to play the prequel Ascension, but this new one, that is a sequel (I think), unless that is Kratos father and the boy Kratos, does have a story that interested me.

Detroit – Become Human : I love games like Heavy Rain and Until Dawn. Real choice and consequence, all playing out with no game over until end credits. This is much more what I wish the TellTale games episodic pretend choice/consequence games were like.

Spider-Man : I was hoping the rumored game would be from Sucker Punch, but Insomniac is also a good developer. I wouldn’t be interested in the game except if it is from one of these developers. I also like its not tied to the movie, so it will be a game first, and release when its ready, rather than try to be a movie tie-in release.

As for PS-VR? More open to it now than I was before the show. Games of interest

If Farpoint gets good reviews, and if I get PSVR, I will get this game and the controller it will hopefully / likely come with.
